July 31, 2023

The Society of Interventional Radiology Foundation has named a major gift after Scott C. Goodwin, MD, MBA, FSIR, FACR, interim chair and professor of radiology at the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix. The Dr. Scott C. Goodwin Grant for Adenomyosis will launch in October 2023.

The initial focus of the grant will be to fund a prospective and comparative clinical trial investigating adenomyosis, a condition where the uterine lining infiltrates the walls of the uterus, causing pain and heavy menstrual bleeding.

“I feel very honored to have this grant named in my honor,” said Dr. Goodwin.

Funding for the grant came from John Lipman, MD, FSIR, a vascular and interventional radiologist at the Atlanta Fibroid Center, who specializes in fibroid treatment and has performed over 10,000 uterine fibroid embolization procedures.

“I am so grateful that Dr. Lipman, one of the early adopters of uterine artery embolization, has through his beneficence made it possible for the SIR Foundation to continue to support research on uterine artery embolization, which is a minimally invasive treatment for fibroids and adenomyosis, diseases that impact the health of millions of women in this country,” said Dr. Goodwin, who joined the College of Medicine – Phoenix in 2017 as a professor of radiology and was appointed interim chair in 2022.

Dr. Lipman’s gift will also provide five years of funding for the Dr. James B. Spies Global Summit on Uterine Fibroid and Adenomyosis Research beginning summer 2023.

“Dr. Goodwin and Dr. Spies have had a lasting and transformative impact on research into uterine fibroids and the safe and effective procedure of uterine artery embolization,” said Dr. Lipman in a SIR Foundation press release. “I am inspired by their decades-long service as physicians, researchers, educators and advocates, and grateful to have this opportunity to support ongoing research into this historically underfunded area of care afflicting historically underserved women in particular.”

Dr. Goodwin previously practiced interventional radiology at the Phoenix VA Health Care System. Prior to that, he was the CEO of Banner – University Medical Group. He was also the Hasso Brothers Professor and Chair of Radiological Sciences and vice president of the Medical Group at the University of California, Irvine where he is now a professor emeritus. He previously worked as the vice chair of radiology and the chief of imaging services at the Greater Los Angeles Health Care System. He also served as professor and chair of radiology at Wayne State University, and as professor and chief of vascular and interventional radiology at the University of California, Los Angeles.

According to their website, the SIR Foundation is “a scientific foundation dedicated to fostering research in interventional radiology for the purposes of advancing scientific knowledge, increasing the number of skilled investigators, and developing innovative therapies that lead to improved patient care and quality of life.”
