At the Arizona Health Sciences Center, we are on a remarkable mission to improve lives. Our physicians, pharmacists, nurses and other health-care practitioners, faculty members, researchers and staff are a force for Arizona. Their dedication to the well-being of individuals and communities, the education of tomorrow’s health-care professionals and the search for treatments and cures for disease is unyielding.

The story of AHSC, Arizona’s only academic health sciences center, begins decades ago on the campus of The University of Arizona in Tucson and expands outward rapidly, touching the urban areas, rural communities and far-reaching landscapes of our state and including any number of health-related organizations that serve across Arizona. From its base in Tucson and its growing presence on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus in downtown Phoenix, AHSC has an impact that extends well beyond Arizona’s borders.

While the economic and political realities of the day present immense challenges to health care and its practitioners, the field may never have been more exciting than it is now. The linkages between public health, prevention and the advent of personalized medicine have brought “wellness” care into the spotlight and a re-focus on individual patients. As life spans increase and demographics change, more of our energy and resources are channeled toward chronic diseases and care of the elderly. Diagnostic tests and therapeutic interventions that were unimaginable 10 years ago now are readily available. New advances in biomedical imaging and in minimally invasive surgical techniques are revolutionizing the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that previously required major surgery. In combination, today’s health-care professionals are presented simultaneously with more opportunities and more challenges for meeting the needs of our diverse populations and delivering excellent care than ever before.

At AHSC we embrace the challenges. I welcome you to follow the unfolding story through the pages of this Web site, as we continue striving to make life better for the people of Arizona.
